THE ASSOCIATE ROLE

The Associate will work closely with a Partner (Deal Team Leader) and a Principal, Vice President or Sr. Associate to support the activities of a Deal Team. Associates are expected to demonstrate strong skills in the following areas:

Support of Sourcing / Opportunity Identification / Filtering
Associates are expected to support a Deal Team in identifying high-quality investment opportunities and keeping pipeline management systems up to date. Utilizing BIP's best-in-class sourcing strategies and tools, Associates assist Deal Team Members in managing a high-quality pipeline from the top of the funnel to the bottom. Associates are also expected to aid in filtering out investment opportunities that do not meet our investment criteria.

Support of Relationship Building / High-Level Deal Structuring
Associates are expected to assist Deal Team Members to develop trust, alignment and shared vision with founders and their management teams. Associates are expected to support Sr. Deal Team Members in their efforts to develop and sign term sheets with founders/companies leading companies that represent high-quality investment opportunities.

Support of High-Quality Underwriting & Diligence
The Associate is charged with developing and maintaining models, research, customer interviews, and all analytical work that senior Deal Team Members deem necessary to appropriately evaluate a prospective deal. Associates also play a critical role in preparing exceptional investment memoranda so that BIP Ventures' Investment Committee can efficiently evaluate prospective investment opportunities. Associates will play a supporting role in final presentations to the BIP Ventures Investment Committee. Evaluation of Associates will be heavily weighted on their ability to produce insightful models and conclusions that help BIP Team Members identify and manage risk/reward.

Support of High-Quality Transaction & Closing
The Associate is expected to provide transaction support throughout due diligence and closing process. Expectations include contributing to the legal documentation process, communicating with the Deal Team Members on changes in specific terms, and supporting a closing process prior to release of funds.

Support of Post-Investment Value Creation
Post-investment, the Associate is responsible for ensuring that each portfolio company provides timely, high-quality business updates. The Associate will work collaboratively with their counterparts on the Value Creation Team to ensure that each portfolio company assigned to their Deal Team follows the BIP Reporting Process.

Deal Hygiene
Associates are responsible for supporting Deal Team Members in the production and maintenance of models, documents, capitalization tables, specific market research, etc. to ensure that Deal Team Members have an informational advantage.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Listed examples are illustrative and representative of the tasks required of this position but are not exhaustive.

• Review, analyze, and research investment opportunities (new and follow-on) with Team Lead

  • Provide market research, financial and KPI analysis, company due diligence, and memo creation for prospective investments
  • Support due diligence, underwriting, legal, and other transaction processes during live deals
  • Begin building and maintain a network of VC ecosystem stakeholders (investors, entrepreneurs, service providers, other investors, etc.) to cultivate deal flow and diligence networks
  • Support Deal Lead on portfolio company management and strategy by working directly with portfolio company management teams
  • Leverage the Value Creation Team to assist portfolio companies and drive equity value in portfolio companies

REQUIREMENT TO ADVANCE

Advancement to the next level (Senior Associate) at BIP Ventures is based on 1) demonstrating emerging mastery of BIP's Investment Process.

Requirements

Education and Experience

  • BS or BA Required; Business/Econ, Computer Science, Engineering preferred
  • Candidates should have 2+ years of experience in Investment Banking, Private Buy-Side Investing, Management Consulting; previous experience in a Buy-Side investor role a plus Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of the private equity or venture capital investing process
  • Deep understanding of investment due diligence process and high level of urgency
  • Mastery of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Advanced proficiency in financial modeling and investment returns analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment, working both independently and as a team
  • Self-starter with strong work ethic and uncompromising personal integrity
  • Ability to prioritize different projects and priorities simultaneously to meet deadlines
  • Effective, versatile, and action-oriented when it comes to problem-solving
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • The Associate position is a two-year program within our firm with the opportunity for promotion to Senior Associate (with exceptional performance).
