We are hiring an Investment Associate to join the team at The Production Board!
About The Production Board
TPB works to Reimagine Earth by investing in technology businesses at the Seed and Series A stage, across life sciences, AI/software, food/ag and human health markets.
TPB is a venture capital firm that takes a science-led and thesis-driven approach to investing. We invest in founders who are ambitious enough to create or transform large markets by “connecting the dots", from science and engineering breakthroughs to end-markets and talent. Backed by Alphabet, Allen & Company, Cascade, Blackrock and others, TPB has invested more than $400 million since its founding in 2017.
About the Role
As our Investment Associate, you’ll be working closely with our partners to conduct due diligence, make and monitor investments.
You’ll work closely with the Partners driving our investment process, identify new areas of science and develop investment theses, and most importantly, work closely with founders to build their businesses from the earliest stages to commercial scale. Your investing work may also lead to co-founding one or more newcos in partnership with experienced investors, operators and technologists in the TPB network.
We love novel platforms and like to invest early across sectors, markets and technologies. Within life sciences and biotech, investment areas include novel therapeutic modalities and diagnostics driven by scientific breakthroughs, including ML/AI. More broadly within software, we are interested in how advances in AI can reinvent infrastructure, applications and services. We are particularly interested in cross-functional advances in the life sciences, software, food/ag and human health markets.
Responsibilities
- Investment Analysis: Support TPB’s partners in Seed/Series A investment evaluation and execution. This includes market and competitive analysis, technical diligence coordination, due diligence execution (customer, founder references), and financial analysis (cap table, TAM, operating models).
- Investment Execution: Managing an efficient investment pipeline, founder outreach, timely execution of term sheets, and closing financings.
- Building New Theses: Assist GPs in identifying and analyzing new investment areas through market mapping, competitive analysis, open source and private data analysis, and technical/scientific discovery.
- Opportunity Tracking & Reporting: Manage our opportunity pipeline and handle quarterly data collection/documentation for portfolio reviews, board decks, and LP communications.
- Post-Investment Value-Add: Work closely with founders on strategic and analytical projects (financial, operational, product) to advance TPB companies towards their next business milestone.
About You
- Organized and Outcome-Oriented: You have a knack for creating clarity out of complexity. You analyze investments and build investment-related analyses and systems that drive efficiency and velocity in due diligence and investing decisions.
- Deeply Analytical: You employ an investor’s lens to identify the key assumptions that drive a business. Your approach integrates both qualitative and quantitative data from the company and your own due diligence.
- Science & Engineering Depth: You excel in conducting due diligence on scientific and engineering-driven startups, and discerning the key variables that transform science into viable products and successful businesses.
- Financial Acumen: You have a solid track record in leading and supporting significant financial transactions, including fundraising, venture investments, commercial partnerships and M&A.
- Written Communication: Your approach to analysis is not just about depth but also about effectively communicating complex ideas with exceptional clarity and succinctness.
- Curious and Adaptable: Your curiosity drives you to continuously research and investigate new technologies and their applications. You are wedded to building businesses using first principles, not a particular sector.
Your Experience
- Required: 3+ years of work experience in management consulting, banking or similar field where quantitative analysis, market research due diligence and valuations are already part of your toolkit.
- Required: Technical engineering, life sciences, quantitative undergrad; advanced technical degree a plus.
- Required: Work experience with technology startups at the Seed through Series A stage.
- Required: Local to the SF Bay Area and culturally steeped in Bay Area startup and venture capital.
- Preferred: Prior experience at a venture capital fund, working with healthcare, consumer, biotech or B2B businesses.
The Production Board is committed to building an inclusive workplace and diverse teams, and we welcome interest from individuals of all backgrounds.
