The Position
H/L seeks an enthusiastic, innovative, dedicated, and mature VC Associate to join our family. We are looking for a professional with prior experience in venture capital, and a passion for entrepreneurship, social impact, and working hands on with early-stage companies. The Associate would directly support our Managing Partner and other key staff members. The primary activities for the VC Associate are to assist in H/L’s evaluation of start-ups, due diligence process, deal structuring, and support of existing portfolio companies. H/L is building a new model for venture, and our Associate will be a crucial part of our team, based in New York City. H/L’s VC Associate will be responsible for vital tasks, including the following:
- Sourcing and Due Diligence
- Conducting general market research and tracking relevant trends in H/L’s sectors of interest;
- Sourcing investment opportunities for the Studio and our CityRock family of funds in accordance with H/L’s thesis.
- Reviewing incoming deal flow, managing phone screens and meetings during the due diligence process.
- Reviewing data rooms, business plans, financial models, product roadmaps, and other due diligence materials provided by potential candidate companies.
- Performing valuation modeling, scenario modeling, conducting deal structure analysis.
- Conducting market and competitive landscape analysis, as well as product and technology reviews, leveraging the support of our broader teams where needed.
- Analyzing and synthesizing information received through our due diligence qualification calls and surveys.
- Producing summary reports, internal memos, and diligence reports on candidate companies; presenting to the Investment Committee.
- Managing our internal process as it relates to the deal pipeline alongside our Head of Special Projects.
- Portfolio Company Growth & VC Platform Activities
- Assisting in projects, analysis, and other value-add work for existing portfolio companies; in collaboration with the Managing Partner and the Platform team.
- Leveraging H/L’s powerful ecosystem of Experts in Residence, Venture Partners, Advisors, and investors effectively.
- Please note that H/L maintains virtually daily contact with our portfolio companies, so it is expected that the Associate will be able to dynamically support various portfolio company needs.
Key Traits
The ideal candidate will demonstrate several important characteristics, including being:
- 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in venture capital, investment banking, or principal investing required. Proven ability in financial modeling, including familiarity with financial forecasts and models, capitalization tables, equity waterfalls, and venture style deal structures.
- Passion for positive social impact; deep sense of integrity and exceptional judgment.
- Exhibit a high degree of professionalism and discretion, including situation-appropriate work and communication style.
- Hard-Working. Possessing a strong work ethic, responsive, and detailed. Stays until the job is done.
- Helpful can-do attitude as a mature team player; strong ability to build and curate relationships and trust; do-any-job attitude.
- Confident, with the ability to work flexibly and autonomously in an open-ended, self-directed work culture, especially given H/L’s compact team and relatively unstructured office environment.
- Critical Thinker. Creative, intellectually curious, analytical, and truly engaged by difficult questions and new models.
- Advanced organization and multitasking skills, allowing effective prioritization and meeting deadlines without fail.
- Possessing strong communications skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal), especially as the Analyst will often be talking to entrepreneurs and stakeholders on behalf of the firm.
- Technically-Adept. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite. Experience with Pitchbook, Crunchbase, Carta, Affinity helpful. Other technical, product-related, and research skills beneficial.
- Academically Qualified. Excellent academic performance; a minimum of Bachelor’s Degree required.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this role is set between $100,000 and $130,000. This role may also be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits, such as a discretionary bonus, appropriate profit share, as well as health, dental, and 401(k) contributions. Actual compensation for successful candidates may vary based on several factors, including skills, qualifications, and experience.
Location
This role is a FT in-person role based in New York City.
